The Stern Tube

Many years ago, there was a mechanical and civil engineer named Isambard Kingdom Brunel. In 1843 he designed the first iron-built ocean-going ship, the SS Great Britain, which used a propeller instead of paddle wheels to propel the ship forward. This was also the first vessel that used a stern tube which was closed off with a simple stuffing box.

Nowadays everyone knows that a vessel uses a propeller, located at the aft peak of the ship, to propel the vessel forward and surprisingly often we speak to people wondering how the connection is made between the propeller and the main engine. Like the name suggests, the stern tube is a hollow tube which accommodates the bearings, the seal boxes and the propeller shaft. The stern tube is filled with stern tube oil, grease or water and forms a barrier between the water outside and the engine room inside the vessel. Without a stern tube, generating thrust is not possible. The bearing arrangement and sealing of the stern tube can make a big difference in a ship's ability to control the propeller and keep water from leaking into the ship.

In addition, the stern tube is the only piece that connects propellers to the ship. Propellers, of course, can weigh thousands of pounds, meaning a stern tube needs to be sturdy enough to support the propeller's weight. To function properly, a ship's tail shaft must be lubricated with stern tube oil. Typically, ships have lubricating systems consisting of header tanks positioned between six to nine feet above the water line to create pressure that allows the stern tube oil to flow into the tube. Because lubrication is so vital to a ship's ability to generate thrust, it's important that nothing reduces its effectiveness. Naturally, water thins the lubricant, so sealing the connection between the stern tube and the propeller is essential. This is accomplished by using stern tube bearings.

Stern tube bearings serve two main functions:

· to properly connect the propeller to the ship
· to keep water from leaking into the stern tube (and stern tube oil from leaking out)

If properly arranged and sealed, stern tubes will allow for adequate propulsion, which is the goal of any ship. Ensuring the proper arrangement is a science that has been widely studied and written about

The Unique Applications of Stern Tube Oil

Learn more about the specifications of stern tube oil and its applications in modern, marine engineering. How this class of oil assists in the mechanics of stern tube bearings.

Stern tube oil is an important component in marine engineering. This type of oil has many different maritime applications. Stern tube oil can be used in the tube bearings and fin stabilizers of modern ships. Although its main purpose is to provide lubrication for mechanical parts, it also assists in preventing corrosion and rust. Overall, stern tube oil is a versatile liquid that plays many roles in the functioning of modern sea vessels. PANOLIN, the leading producer of such stern tube oil from Switzerland, is specialized in lubricants for heavy duty machinery, combining high performance and eco friendliness at the same time.

The Components of Stern Tube Oil

This class of lubricant is created to withstand high amounts of stress and extended operating times. PANOLIN stern tube oil, however, consist of synthetic components, meeting highest quality and sustainability standards.

How Stern Tube Oil Performs Its Role

Stern tube oil from PANOLIN is perfectly designed to support heavy duty type bearings in the ship's hull. Heavy duty bearings are one of three types of stern tube bearings. Specifically, they are constructed with metal, and have an outward seal that is not airtight. Thus, it is necessary to employ a lubricant that prevents saltwater from affecting the interior components.

The high-viscosity of stern tube oil meets this need. Generally, stern tube oil is served to the bearing from a tank which is located above sea level. The downward pressure associated with the release of the oil helps prevent the penetration of outside water. The generous viscosity level of stern tube oil complements the pressurized release system. Stern tube oil is also useful in the ship's fin mechanisms. The fin's internal components and bearings also require a high-viscosity lubricant. As with the stern tube, the fin stabilizer's oil is gravity fed through a tank above sea level. Thus, stern tube oil is appropriate for both stern tube and fin stabilizer lubrication.

The Benefits of Stern Tube Oil

This type of oil provides numerous advantages in the ship's mechanical process. First, it is economic to use. It also assists in leakage control while protecting the delicate surface area of bearings. Furthermore, this class of oil easily emulsifies seawater while preserving its properties as a lubricant. Finally, it allows a single type of oil to be used in two distinct applications.

PANOLIN stern tube oils outperform the usual benefits of regular stern tube oils. The oils manage to fulfil both high level quality and sustainability requirements. Thanks to more than three decades of experience in the production of heavy-duty oils, PANOLIN provides excellent products for all kinds of applications, on top of that, the fully synthetic stern tube lubricants PANOLIN fabricates are completely biodegradable. In a nutshell, PANOLIN juggles quality and eco friendliness.
